Coast Care
What is Coast Care BOP?
Coast Care BOP is a community based programme coordinated by Environment Bay of Plenty which aims to reduce erosion of sand dunes on the coastal reserve. The Coast Care BOP mission is "working together to care for our coast".

Coast Care groups are made up of residents and beach users who care about their coastal environment and want to actively participate in protecting and managing that environment. Local residents, holiday home owners, beach users, beachfront property owners and conservationists should be represented on Coast Care groups.

Coast Care groups advise Council what work they regard as priority and give their time to carry out tasks relating to restoring and protecting the dune system.

Coast Care BOP is supported by Environment Bay of Plenty and the District Councils which offer advice on reducing erosion and assist the groups with resources including native plants, fertiliser and building materials.

What Can You Do To Help?

Coast Care 1

Coast Care 2

  1. Look for the Signs

  2. Signs show you the best and fastest way to the beach.
  1. Respect the Fences

  2. Fences protect dune plants.  Keep to your side of the fence to let plants grow.
  1. Surf the waves Not the Dunes

  2. Sandboarding on the dunes destroys plants, loosens the sand and causes erosion.

Coast Care 4

Coast Care 5

Coast Care 6
  1. Keep Motorbikes off the Dunes

  2. Important plants and birds live in the dunes.  Motorbikes destroy them.
  1. Look after the Plants

  2. Feet do kill plants.  Coastal native plants hold the sand together.  Dunes build up, protect our land and houses during storms and povide homes for insects, birds and lizards.
  1. Look after the Dunes

  2. Sandy beaches are great places to have fun.  Look after the dunes so that we can keep our fantastic beaches.
