Tarawera at Awakaponga

The Awakaponga rain gauge is situated on
the Rangitaiki Plains between the townships of Edgecumbe and Matata.
Summer water levels at this site can get as low as
0.85 metres, but normal water levels are closer to 1.2 metres. A high flood
level of 3.17 metres was recorded in December 1995.
The site records a mean annual rainfall of 1240 mm. On the 19th
of May 2005 a maximum daily fall of 230 mm was recorded, leading to significant
flood damage in the Matata community. An astonishing total of 95mm was recorded
in 1 hour on this day.
