Environment Bay of Plenty has appointed a nutrient assessment officer to support landowners who are affected by proposed new regulations in the Proposed Regional Water and Land Plan.
Rule 11 is a series of rules in the plan that set limits on nitrogen and phosphorus loss from land use activities in targeted lake catchments.
The nutrient assessment officer’s role will be to support people whose property’s come under the Rule 11 umbrella. The officer will work with them to sort out their nutrient benchmark and be able to advise them on ways they can intensify land use while keeping within their nutrient budgets.
The officer will contact large properties and dairy farms individually over the next few months. A land use survey form, and later a property-specific questionnaire, will be sent to all other affected landowners. The officer is available to help landowners though this process. The information from these will be put through a nutrient model, called a Nitrogen and Phosphorus Load Assessment System (NPLAS) to determine the nutrient benchmark.
