Lake Rotoehu’s quality is generally poor. Over a number of years, Maori landowners have worked with Environment Bay of Plenty to plant lake margins, and this may have helped improve water quality by filtering nutrients.
Lake Rotoehu is a relatively quiet lake valued for trout fishing, kayaking and some
waterskiing. However since 1993 it has suffered major cyanobacterial blooms, and more
recently the spread of hornwort beds through much of the shallow areas.
Te Arawa value the Te Arawa Lakes and the Lakes' resources as taonga and continue to
maintain their spiritual, traditional, cultural and historical relationships with their ancestral
lakes.
