Rotorua at Kaharoa


Site Info:
The Kaharoa rainfall and recharge gauge is situated on the northern side of Lake Rotorua.
The site records an annual rainfall of 1790 mm and daily falls of up to 270 mm.
Rainfall is important as it is the recharge source for groundwater in groundwater springs. The rainfall recharge lysimeter aims to measure the rate that rainfall flows through the soil.
The Lake Rotorua catchment has many groundwater fed springs that are important for cultural, fishing, recreational and water supply purposes to Rotorua residents.
Measurement of rainfall recharge allows scientists to estimate the land area that supports spring flow. For example a large area mainly on the Mamaku Plateau, supports the spring flow at Haumarana Springs. Knowing the rainfall recharge also allows for the study of the dynamics of groundwater recharge and it effect on water quality, for example most nitrate inputs to groundwater occur in winter as this is when most storm events contribute rainfall recharge to groundwater.
