Disturbed sites are those which have had the topsoil removed or significantly disturbed. Revegetation of disturbed sites should be carried out as soon as possible to stabilise the soil and prevent weed infestations.
Quick Establishment Ground Cover Plants
A diversity of grass and legumes combined with a high sowing rate will provide the quick establishment of good ground cover. Oats or barely (120-150 kg/ha) or blue lupin (100 kg/ha) can provide fast, temporary cover on more gentle slopes with a good layer of topsoil.
The sowing rates can be increased by 25 % for more severe situations and decreased by 25 % if some topsoil is present.
When oversowing slip faces use a 'pumice' mix as represented in the table below and add 3 kg/ha red clover (eg 'Grasslands Colenso') and 10 kg/ha birdsfoot trefoil (eg 'Grasslands Goldie').
Ensure that all legume seed has been inoculated with a suitable rhizobium before sowing.
If soil pH is below 5.0 lime as required.
Apply superphosphate at 450 kg/ha and sulphate of ammonia at 250 kg/ha (split between two dressings) or a compound of NPK fertiliser (12:10:10) at 500 kg/ha when fertiliser is required.
Cultivating the soil by running sheep briefly through or using chain harrows will incorporate the seed into the soil help improve germination.
Sites may be mulched with shredded paper or wood fibre (1000-1500 kg/ha) or straw (2500-6500 kg/ha) to protect against rain splash, drying out and seed/fertiliser retention.
If the site is too steep or unstable seed may be sown by hydroseeding where commercial operators spray a slurry of mulch, seed, fertiliser, adhesives and water over the area.
