Stock water supply is often in the form of natural streams or springs.
Stock can cause erosion and defecate in these areas increasing sediment and nutrient loading in the waterways.
When waterways are protected with riparian (stream bank) retirement zones alternative stock water provisions are required.
Alternative water sources include:
- the existing farm reticulation system with extra reservoir capacity added
- gravity fed stream or spring supply
- water powered pumping system stream or spring supply - water wheels or hydraulic rams
- electric pumps from bore, stream or spring supplies
Water supply systems need to cater for the maximum demand:
- 70 l/head milking cows
- 45 l/head beef cattle
- 25 l/head calves
- 3 l/head calves
A range of pipe sizes and types are available to satisfy system requirements depending on flow rates, operating pressure and durability.
