FAQs

If you are thinking about applying for funding, but have a few questions that need to be answered first, take a look at this list. These are a few of the most common questions we are asked.

If the question you had isn't here, please email us at info@envbop.govt.nz or phone us at 0800 ENV BOP (368 267). We will keep this page updated and add any other common questions we are asked.

Can our group implement a project if it is on public land?
To implement a project on public land (or any land not owned by the applicant) you must provide written permission from the landowner with your application.  This includes organisations such as the Department of Conservation or land under Maori ownership.  Remember your project will still need to meet all the fund criteria outlined in this booklet.

Can I plant exotic plants such as rhododendrons in my project?
The purpose of the environmental enhancement fund states that a project is to promote, enhance or protect the natural character of the Bay of Plenty.  Exotic plants are not natural to the Bay of Plenty.  However, where planting is part of a heritage site and exotic plants have a heritage value funding is possible.

Kawerau South School 3

What happens if I need a resource consent to implement my project?
Environment Bay of Plenty prefers any resource consent to be obtained prior to submitting environmental enhancement fund applications.  Environment Bay of Plenty will not pay for resource consent applications as part of the project costs.

How long can my project run for?
Environment Bay of Plenty will not normally fund a project longer than three years in a single funding round. Whatever the timeframe you need to clearly show us in your project plan what you’re going to do over that period and what your outcomes will be.

Would we be eligible for funding to make the entrance of our school nicer by planting some native trees?
The purpose of your project appears to be primarily a landscaping or beautification project and is therefore inconsistent with the purpose of the fund as stated in this booklet.

Who is responsible for Health and Safety on the project site?
The recipient of funding is responsible for ensuring all OSH requirements are met either by volunteers or contractors.

When does my project need to start by?
Environment Bay of Plenty expects any group funded through the environmental enhancement fund to start their project within 12 months of funding notification.

How much money can I apply for?
Environment Bay of Plenty provides a guideline of no more than 20% of the funding available.

What happens if there are too many projects for the money Environment Bay of Plenty is giving out?
Every year the amount of funding requested has been in excess of the amount available and unfortunately some projects do miss out because of the number of great projects groups want to do.

Can I do a research or scoping project with environmental enhancement funding?
No, the primary purpose of your project must be to promote, enhance or protect directly the Bay of Plenty's environment.

Would I be eligible for funding to fence and enhance a native bush area on my farm?
Not through the fund. We support projects for private landowners through environmental programmes. Contact our Land Resources staff to discuss.
